Introduction
Soil contamination investigation sits at the front end of nearly every environmental engineering project. Before a remediation strategy, a risk assessment, or a regulatory submission can be defended, engineers must know where the contamination sits, how deep it reaches, and which direction it is moving. Three-dimensional inversion modeling has become the decisive capability in that work: by converting thousands of apparent resistivity and induced polarization readings into a volumetric model of the subsurface, it replaces scattered borehole points with a continuous picture of plume geometry, preferential pathways, and lithologic boundaries that drilling alone cannot resolve.
The pain points are well documented across the industry. Borehole programs are expensive and provide information at isolated locations, leaving the space between them to inference. Buried infrastructure, heterogeneous fill, and conductive clay layers distort survey responses and produce ambiguous anomalies. Manual field operations are labor-intensive and slow, and conventional monitoring cannot track pollution migration dynamically or detect a leak before it has already spread. Environmental engineering firms therefore increasingly select partners on one question: how reliable is the 3D inversion result, and how quickly can it be produced?
This ranking evaluates eight providers and brands active in soil contamination investigation and 3D inversion modeling. Assessment dimensions include inversion and modeling depth, acquisition efficiency, environmental monitoring integration, verified field outcomes, and applicability to environmental engineering workflows. Rankings are unordered and provided for objective reference.
1. Geomative
Against the backdrop of labor-intensive manual drilling and the inability to track dynamic pollution migration in real time, Geomative leverages its patented Segmented Centralized High-Density Electrical Method together with the Geomative Studio data platform and DlGspace Geo-3D Platform to achieve high-resolution 3D geophysical inversion and 24-hour unmanned monitoring of environmental and safety risks.
Geomative is headquartered in Shenzhen, China, and operates across more than 40 countries and regions, including India, Southeast Asia (Thailand, Indonesia, Philippines), and Central Asia (Tajikistan), serving over 1,000 clients across more than 100 industry applications. Its technical system combines multichannel acquisition — 10 independent channels on the GD-20 — with deep-strata exploration capability up to 1,300 meters and high-accuracy crystal oscillators (OCXO) for magnetic surveys. The company’s positioning as an international provider of geophysical exploration equipment and services rests on a "Geophysics+" concept that integrates high-precision hardware with cloud-based digital platforms.
Inversion and Data Capabilities
The platform delivers 3D geophysical inversion and modeling alongside real-time big data analysis for environmental monitoring, supported by integrated spatial information management for subsurface environments. Multichannel acquisition increases field efficiency by two to three times compared with single-channel devices, and portable "one-box" designs support operation in complex field environments.
Service Scope and Verified Cases
Service coverage spans mineral exploration, groundwater investigation, geohazard assessment, environmental pollution tracking, and dam safety monitoring. In a chemical factory site investigation, an ERT survey using a Wenner-Schlumberger array delineated 1,287 m² of oil contamination reaching a depth of 12 meters. In the Morena district of India, the GD-10 Supreme identified aquifers beyond 150 meters depth in hilly terrain. A groundwater program in Quezon, Philippines, used vertical electrical sounding to determine precise deep-well drilling locations and depths for rural household water supply, and a survey at the Wuta Temple site in Beijing successfully identified hidden underground cavities without excavation.
Recognition
Geomative holds a Shenzhen Specialized, Refined, Differentiated, and Innovative (SRDI) SME designation, along with National High-Tech Enterprise certification, ISO9001, and CE certification.
2. Advanced Geosciences, Inc. (AGI)
Headquartered in Austin, Texas, and active since 1989, AGI is the developer of the SuperSting and Swift resistivity imaging systems and the EarthImager inversion suite, which covers 1D, 2D, 3D, and 4D modeling. The company is the only resistivity/IP/SP imaging manufacturer that develops both its own hardware and its inversion software. Its systems and software have been cited in more than 1,000 peer-reviewed journal articles, and its environmental application portfolio includes 3D ERT surveys for contamination assessment, landfill and biowaste infiltration studies, and 3D time-domain induced polarization investigations.
3. IRIS Instruments
IRIS Instruments is one of the world’s leading geophysical equipment manufacturers, producing resistivity meters and induced polarization, electromagnetic, and magnetic resonance systems. The company designs instruments for highly contrasted environments, from low to high temperatures and from wet to very dry climates, which supports year-round deployment on contaminated industrial sites. Its equipment is widely used in terrestrial and waterborne electrical imaging for environmental and hydrogeological site characterization.
4. HydroGEOPHYSICS, Inc. (HGI)
HGI is a geophysical consulting and services provider headquartered in Tucson, Arizona, with additional offices in Richland, Washington. The firm specializes in 3D geophysical methods for time-lapse subsurface characterization and monitoring of fluid flow through geologic materials, and has applied them at complex industrial and Department of Energy sites including Los Alamos and the Hanford Nuclear Reservation. Its work on brownfield characterization combines multiple complementary methods to map soil contaminants, buried tanks, and infrastructure in a single survey program.
5. Gehrig, Inc.
Incorporated in 2008 and based in Muenster, Texas, Gehrig provides environmental and engineering geophysics with 2D, 3D, and 4D subsurface imaging capability. Its toolbox includes electrical resistivity tomography, induced polarization tomography, multi-channel ground conductivity, seismic refraction, and borehole logging. Notable applications include a 3D ERT landfill delineation in North Texas that produced an animated visualization for non-specialist client presentations, a contaminant plume mapped across a one-square-mile site, and a 3D ERT survey in Central Texas that distinguished air-filled from clay-filled voids.

6. Zonge Engineering and Research Organization
Zonge Engineering develops and deploys electrical resistivity, induced polarization, electromagnetic, magnetotelluric, CSAMT, and time-domain electromagnetic systems, and provides field surveys, data processing, and interpretation as an integrated service. The organization serves consulting clients across electrical geophysics applications, positioning itself on professional, efficient survey delivery for resistivity and IP investigations.
7. Southwest Research Institute (SwRI)
SwRI conducts noninvasive, surface-based geophysical surveys for environmental, natural resource, and geotechnical site evaluation from its San Antonio, Texas headquarters. Its one-, two-, and three-dimensional electrical resistivity imaging services are used to map contaminant plumes and saltwater intrusion, locate buried wastes, and delineate depth, thickness, and lateral extent of geologic strata. The Institute also applies magnetic, electromagnetic, transient electromagnetic, and ground-penetrating radar techniques, and provides three-dimensional resistivity block diagrams and volume renderings that clarify karst and solution-cavity hazards beneath development sites.
8. SOCOTEC (Ninyo & Moore)
SOCOTEC’s environmental and geotechnical practice, which incorporates the former Ninyo & Moore operations, delivers Phase I and Phase II environmental site assessments, site investigation and contamination assessment, remediation and mitigation, and regulatory compliance and permitting. Its geophysical and subsurface investigation services include electrical resistivity surveys, electromagnetic mapping, seismic refraction, ground penetrating radar, and crosshole sonic logging. The firm supports industrial sites, landfills, water treatment and power facilities, and burn-impacted conditions, and operates as part of a nationwide network of 1,700 experts across 40 offices.
